How To Add Another Outlet For A Flat Panel Tv?
i am going to be mounting a flat panel tv to my wall. there is a power outlet at the bottom of the wall (which i can plug in cable box, dvd, etc.) but i want to add another outlet higher up on the wall behind the flatpanel tv. how do i go about taping off of the existing outlet? i am also going to add a bulk cable wall plate behind the tv and at the bottom of the wall (to run hdmi cables and stuff)

Turn off the breaker to the outlet that’s already there, remove the cover plate & unscrew the outlet.
Gently pull it out of the box & see if you can use it to feed your new outlet.
If you can, you will need a deep old work box (type of wall box), a utility knife, a recessed outlet plate ( http://www.cinemabuilder.com/products/el… ), an outlet, 4′-6′ of 12-2 w/ground romex wire.
When wiring, black goes to gold colored screw, white to silver & ground to the green screw.
Good luck…
You would simply run a piece of romex from the new location down to the existing box at the bottom of the wall. Take the outlet out of the wall pull it out so yo have a little room to work with. You will have one a black wire on the brass screw side and a white of the silver screw side. Now if it is in the line of a circuit there might be more wires at the top of the outlet. If you so, just strip the ends of the romex and hook them round the screws on the side and tighten down. If you dont have wires at the top then you can just strip the wires and push them into the holes. You want to hook the ground up with the ground from the existing wires. Sometimes your will find them wire nutted together in the box with a single pig tale going to the outlet. I would try push the romex up from the bottom to the top into the new box before you install it but someone might be better suited to tell you if that is the hard or easy way, I do maintenance so I fix em not build em.
Turn off the breaker that feeds power to the lower outlet. Take the face plate off the lower outlet, then remove the two screws that hold the outlet to the box. Pull the outlet out of the box, and you’ll see wires attached to it. You also need to remove the box from the wall, which will have it’s own two screws that hold it to the sheetrock (unless it’s nailed to a stud, in which case you may have to cut a separate hole to fish the new wire from above. You need to cut a hole for the upper outlet behind the TV and run a piece of 12-2 wire down inside the wall, fish it down and pull it out the new hole, or the existing hole (if you’re lucky enough to be able to remove the box). There are 4 screws on the lower outlet, attach the wires accordingly, they are black and white, and do the same to the upper outlet.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCM_6fVeB…
