What Are The Best Tactics To Maintain A Long Distance Relationship?

My boyfriend of two years may be attending college on the east coast while I stay in southern California. More specifically, he will be attending Johns Hopkins University while I am at the University of California Los Angeles. He and I did not chose this arrangement–his parents decided, based solely on rankings, that they would prefer JHU to the other schools he was accepted, including UCLA. We have no desire to break up, so I ask that responses do not entail breaking up.
Instead, I’d like advice on how to keep him and I as close as possible–obviously not physically, but emotionally. I will do whatever I can to make this work; he is my absolute best friend and I know that if any young couple is strong enough to handle this, we are.

I have been dating my girlfriend for nearly two years. In August, we are going to college (I’m headed off for California and she is staying on the east coast).
I am hesitant to stay together and I know she wants to stay together. I would like to be with her, but don’t think it will work.
So all you west coast guys… are you meeting/did you meet (hot) girls in college? Did you stay with a high school girlfriend (did it work)? Any success with open relationships?
