I spent $50 on an HDMI cable to connect my Blu-Ray to my HDTV, and after trying different cables to see the difference, I’m never going back.
HDMI has better video, better audio, and they are synched together perfectly to bring you a much nicer HD experience. If you don’t have Blu-Ray or PS3, it’s not as valuable, because you won’t use 1080p anyway. Regularly broadcasted HDTV is only 1080i.

HDMI cables is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data. HDMI supports, on a single cable, any TV or PC video format, including standard, enhanced, and high-definition video, up to 8 channels of digital audio, and the Consumer Electronics Control signal. It is independent of the various digital television standards such as ATSC and DVB as these are encapsulations of compressed MPEG video streams (which can be decoded and output as an uncompressed video stream on HDMI).
    8 channel digital audio?
Basically conventional analog cables comes in yellow (visual), red and white for audio (left and right respectively) thus having a surround system with 5.1 speaker doesn’t make much of a difference. However with HDMI cable it can support up to 8 channels (means left, right, front, back, upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right, which ultimately brings a better surround to with with just 1 cable rather then other cables dangling all over. Apart from that, it delivers enhanced high-definition video which brings down to better-than-cinema quality video. (on how good it actually is, you have to try it yourself)

HDMI cables pass high definition video and audio from one place to another. They can handle higher bitrates than other connector cables. In fact, only HDMI or component video (red/green/blue) can even handle HD video. So while it’s not necessary to use an HDMI cable, you won’t get HD out of your HDTV without one.

No , it’s not necessary. But you can’t get 1080p without it and it can handle video as well as audio ,so one can take the place of to other cables.
