There are 31 places up for grabs, the 32nd place been taken by the hosts.
Italy are the first country to suffer the ignonimity of having to qualify as champions.
However after the dodgy Spanish assisatant ref, I am pretty low on sympathy for them.

They don’t have to qualify, the qualification for the 2010 world cup is also the qualification for the African nations cup.
The top teams in each group go through with the 8 best runners up, they are then divided into 5 groups of 5 with the tops teams going through to the world cup and the top 3 teams in each group going to the African nations cup (which South Africa have to qualify for). In the case of South Africa winning their group the runner up will go to the World Cup.
